Listed below are just a few ways we can put volunteers to work.
You can volunteer your time as a helper before, during, and/or after a Friends’ event.
Helpers are always needed at our Friends events, be they a fundraiser or a service activity. Your help could consist of baking cookies, selling raffle tickets, cutting watermelon, making phone calls, registering attendees. See our Events listings and become familiar with upcoming Friends activities. Then give the Senior Center a phone call at 329-4555 and sign up to help.
Your help is needed serving on one of the Friends planning committees.
The Friends currently have several active committees, each meeting two-to-three times per year. The committees handle mostly fundraisers that are scheduled here and there throughout the year. Board Members chair the committees and do most of the legwork. Nonetheless, there is always a need for new ideas and fresh faces. Many times a fresh face and point of view brings new contacts, vendors and supporters to help us with our fund raising. Visit Join a Friend’s Committee to get an overview of our committees, their responsibilities and current members, then give the Portage Senior Center a phone call to volunteer your time or talents.
You can expand your community service by serving as a board member of the Friends.
Friends board members serve a minimum of two years, attending monthly, hour long board meetings at 8:00 a.m. Board members are asked to serve on two planning committees that meet two-to-three times a year. Minutes and agendas are circulated via email prior to each meeting, enabling those who can not attend the meeting to accept, approve, comment or give input to the proceedings of the meeting. Call the Senior Center regarding your interest in serving on the Friends board. You will have the opportunity to attend one of our board meetings as a guest, and be given an up-to-date copy of the Friends of the Portage Senior Center board packets.
You can support the Friends with a monetary donation.
